The world's most expensive cities have been revealed

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked the most expensive cities to live in Worldwide Cost of Living 2023. The organization measured the prices of more than 200 goods and services in 172 countries. 

Two cities took the first place at once. Singapore tops the list for the 9th time, but this year Zurich joined it. The Swiss city moved up from the 6th place it occupied last year thanks to the strengthening of its national currency.

According to experts' calculations for 2023, prices rose by an average of 7.4% in local currency. The fastest price increase was recorded in Mexico. The cities of Santiago de Queretaro (51) and Aguascalientes (82) rose by 48 and 39 positions respectively. The reason is the strengthening of the national currency.

The Russian cities Moscow (142) and St. Petersburg (147) fell the hardest in the list - by 105 and 74 positions respectively. Although prices rose in local currency (by 5.9% and 6.6%), they fell heavily against the US dollar. 

The most expensive cities according to the EIU:

  • 1-2 places - Singapore, Zurich
  • 3-4 - Geneva, New York
  • 5 - Hong Kong
  • 6 - Los Angeles
  • 7 - Paris
  • 8-9 - Copenhagen, Tel Aviv
  • 10 - San Francisco
