Guide to Chisinau: a park city on seven hills

Chisinau is one of the few cities whose streets still retain traces of their Soviet past. But when you get to know the Moldovan capital better, you realize that modern trends in culture, leisure, and gastronomy have not bypassed it.

Chisinau is beautiful at any time of year, except winter. The city has many large, well-maintained parks and more than 20 lakes, and it stretches along the Bâc River.

This natural diversity allows city dwellers to take long walks, enjoying the clean air and warm southern sun. In winter, according to locals, the capital is slushy and often foggy.

The city museum is located in the center of Chisinau. It is housed in the building of the former water tower. Its construction in the 19th century marked the beginning of the city's water supply system. The permanent exhibition is quite interesting, although the main focus is on the Soviet period of the city's existence. But another attraction of the museum is that, for a mere pittance, you can climb to the top of the tower, which offers a magnificent view of the city.

But don't think that Chisinau is stuck in its past and can only attract nostalgic pensioners.

Connoisseurs of contemporary culture and music will be interested in ARTKOR, a center for creative industries located in the historic center of Chisinau in the courtyard of the Academy of Arts. ARTKOR has become a magnet for creative and artistic people in Moldova. Exhibitions by contemporary artists and photographers, concerts and performances by the most notorious musicians — all this takes place here.

For nightlife enthusiasts, I recommend Skal Club, where you will find entertainment for every taste: spectacular shows, performances by popular artists, and parties until dawn with DJ sets.

Moldova is associated with fresh fruit and vegetables, and indeed, during the season, shops and markets in Chisinau are overflowing with cherries, apricots, peaches, apples, and peppers. However, their quality is not always guaranteed.

To be sure that you are not buying products full of pesticides and other chemicals, it is better to visit the EcoLocal eco-market. It is held in the city center, near the Kentford office building, on Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m. Most of the producers here have certificates confirming that they practice natural farming and grow only organic products.

Of course, it is impossible to imagine a trip to Moldova without tasting local wine. Not far from Chisinau is the Asconi winery, where you can take a tour of the factory and learn about the wine-making process, as well as taste wine in the restaurant.
