History of the competition
Horse races have been held annually in St. Moritz since 1907. The program consists of several disciplines and lasts exactly three Sundays in February. The main events take place on a frozen lake, which is illuminated by the bright winter sun. Spectators can enjoy not only the jockey competition, but also sample local cuisine, listen to local music, and learn more about the region through exhibition stands.
Around 35,000 people from different parts of the country and the world come to Switzerland specifically to be part of this large-scale event. It is also an excellent opportunity to capture the views of Lake St. Moritz and see the mountain peaks of Engadin in person.

Horse racing program
The races include galloping, cantering, and skijoring with 30-minute breaks. Incidentally, galloping involves not only a 1.3 km sprint, but also other distances; cantering is 1.7 km.
Never tried skijoring before? No worries, we'll tell you all about it. In this 2.7 km race, skiers steer unsaddled horses that can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h. There's no doubt that skijoring is the main attraction at White Turf, loved by spectators of all ages.
But the participants in the competition have no time to rest. The daredevils must have physical strength, endurance, and the ability to stand confidently on skis. Courage and bravery are also important, because the title of "King or Queen of Engadin" will be awarded to the best in their field. Incidentally, the winner's title and cup also come with a handsome prize. The White Turf prize fund amounts to 400,000 Swiss francs ($469,000), which is the largest prize money in any horse race in Switzerland.
In 2024, the opening races are scheduled for February 4. The horses and their drivers will set off at 11:30 a.m. local time. The second stage of the competition will take place on February 11, and the third on February 18, each lasting until 2:45 p.m.
Technical details of the competition
A ticket, which starts at just 25 Swiss francs ($29), will grant you access to the trail and the frozen lake.
There is no need to worry about safety. The permissible ice thickness is 25 cm. The organizers pay close attention to this aspect. They even take measurements daily. Incidentally, in 2020, due to abnormally high temperatures for the winter season, the ice races almost turned into a swim in the lake. However, the locals managed to preserve the tradition and not leave the fans without a decent spectacle.
Horses are record holders when it comes to meeting technical requirements. The checklist for preparing them for White Turf will impress even the most experienced traveler.
Before submitting your application to participate in the race, you must complete and send a number of documents to the specified address:
- RCN (notification of eligibility issued by the racing organization for all horses registered in the UK);
- A negative Coggin's test must be performed no later than 30 days prior to the date of the competition.
- confirmation of the UNZL (universal horse life number) and microchip number;
- Animals must be vaccinated against equine influenza and equine herpesvirus. The two vaccines must be administered at least three weeks and no more than two months (21 to 60 days) apart, with the third dose given four to six months (120 to 180 days) after the second vaccination. As for repeat procedures, the right to perform them arises after an interval of 12 months.
Why is it important to submit the documents before applying? If this happens later, the owner is required to pay a fee of 100 Swiss francs ($117). By the way, it is prohibited to tie the tongues of trotters.
It is important to remember that horses must cross the border to participate in White Turf. The following documents will help you do this without any serious problems:
- animal passport;
- a medical certificate;
- ATA Carnet (an international customs document issued by the International Chamber of Commerce that allows for the temporary export and import of goods without paying taxes or duties).
An important detail: organizers only allow thoroughbred horses to participate in Switzerland's main races. And they must be shod with spikes and anti-snow felt pads.
Family Days
In addition to the main competitions, White Turf also hosts family days. The entertainment program is just as exciting as the main program. Dozens of young talents take up the challenge and start racing on the frozen lake. And you don't have to pay to watch this spectacle from the stands or the grounds.
At the same time, young jockeys ride ponies rather than thoroughbred trotters. Incidentally, they can compete in disciplines such as galloping, trotting, and the already familiar skijoring. All this takes place against the backdrop of majestic mountains.
You can also have fun and enjoy yourself in other areas. Guests of all ages and interests can find something to their liking in the entertainment or gastronomic areas, which bring together all the gems of national cuisine. To participate in Family Days, simply register at the organizers' area and bring the appropriate equipment (skis, boots, suit, helmet, and goggles). Family Days are held every Saturday, the day before the main event program.
