Abu Dhabi airport to open new $3 billion terminal

One of the world's largest terminals will open at Abu Dhabi International Airport on November 1. Its construction cost $3 billion.

The new Terminal A was scheduled to open in 2017, but the Covid pandemic significantly delayed the launch. Etihad Airways will make the first ceremonial flight here on October 31, after which the terminal will become available to other airlines.

This terminal will be one of the largest in the world. Its total area is 742,000m2. It will be able to handle up to 45 million passengers per year, or 11,000 passengers per hour. Up to 79 aircraft will be serviced simultaneously. There will be 163 retail outlets and catering establishments inside the terminal.

In addition to its impressive size, Terminal A also stands out for its technological capabilities. Nine biometric self-service points will be operational on its premises, allowing passengers to check in their luggage and proceed to boarding. And 7,500 solar panels installed in the terminal will power a 3 MW power plant. This will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 5,300 tons per year.
