Due to possible tightening of regulations at Turkish airports, tourists and travelers should be aware of new procedures that may be introduced in the near future. Turkish authorities are considering a bill that will significantly affect the process of checking in baggage and passing through security checks at the airport.
According to the proposed bill, the new baggage inspection rules will be brought into line with the provisions of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (the Chicago Convention). The main changes that will affect passengers are as follows:
- Employees of private airport security organizations will be able to manually check passengers' personal belongings when entering the terminal and boarding area.
- Luggage may be inspected even without the owner being present.
- Electronic devices will also be inspected along with luggage.
- Prohibited items will be confiscated upon discovery.
The bill also provides for penalties for aircraft pilots. If the law is passed, pilots who fail to report violations on board during a flight may be fined between $620 and $15,600.
These changes may affect the time you spend at the airport. Plan your arrival in advance to avoid possible delays at security.
Tips for travelers:
- Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before departure.
- Check your luggage for prohibited items.
- Arrange your electronic devices so that they can be easily presented for inspection.
- Prepare your documents in advance to speed up the verification process.
- If you have any questions, please contact airport staff.
